HAM+ · AMATEUR RADIO CERTIFICATE

WHYthe certificate?

Sending your amateur radio certificate makes it easier to get access to the HAM+ app. It is optional when you sign up. We may require it before the app is activated.

Why we ask

With HAM+ you do more than listen. When you talk, your voice goes on the air through real amateur radio repeaters.

In Canada, the Radiocommunication Act (section 4) says that, with some exceptions, no one may operate radio apparatus without an authorization. The Radiocommunication Regulations (section 42) say who may operate radio apparatus in the amateur radio service: first of all, a person who holds an Amateur Radio Operator Certificate with Basic Qualification.

The operating standards of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (RBR-4, section 9) also require every station to give its call sign at the beginning and end of each exchange, and at least every 30 minutes.

These texts do not mention the Internet. But what you say in HAM+ goes on the air. So we want to be sure the call sign on your request is really yours.

The networks ask for it too. EchoLink only accepts holders of a valid licence and asks for proof. RadioID, which issues DMR numbers, asks for the full-page licence. AllStarLink asks for an official copy of the licence.

Licensed in another country?

For now, registration on this site is reserved for holders of a Canadian Amateur Radio Operator Certificate.

What we do with it

  • It is used for one thing only: to check that the name and call sign on your request are really yours, and to read your qualifications.
  • Only the site administrator, Louis (VE2NIR), sees it. It is not published.
  • It is deleted when your account is refused or deleted. The administrator may also delete it as soon as the check is done.
  • Quebec’s Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector gives you rights: you can ask to see what we hold about you, have it corrected, or withdraw your consent. Write to support@ve2nir.ca. The Act provides for a reply within 30 days.

If you do not send it

Your request may still be accepted if the official call sign register and QRZ.com confirm your call sign. If not, we may ask you for the certificate before the app is activated.

How to send it

  • A photo (JPEG or PNG) or a PDF of 2 MB at most. A large photo is made smaller by itself before it is sent. It must be easy to read.
  • You may hide your home address.
  • Three things must be readable: your name, your call sign and your qualifications.
  • Send it when you sign up, at the moment you enter your HAM+ activation code, or later from your account, on the “My devices” page.
